Got to thinking about theme movies that have influenced how I see/RP Guardians. Pretty much this set...
Full Metal Jacket. The late great Stanley Kubrick's Vietnam-critical war movie, which describes how the army makes random youngins into soldiers, but also makes them a bit insane. This is how I think of Guardians, objectively - people willing to damage and be damaged to survive a life that no sane person should live. Quite probably most of them don't even grasp how nuts this is.
Band of Brothers. Golden Globe -winning TV-series, based on tales from WW2 veterans of 101st Airborne. What appeals to me here is the characters looking out for each other, not themselves, and sheer bloodyminded determination to see it through. The defining bit is the episode about Bastogne - the description of a bunch of under-equipped and freezing yanks in winter war hell is capped off with a screen telling that when they finally were relieved, the entire company denied they ever needed rescue. This is our attitude to battle.
Apocalypse Now. Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam epic, famous for it's description of a renegade Green Barret, the men who followed him and the man sent to kill him. It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I always think Sarama is how that renegade started out. Except in this world, she isn't megalomaniac (yet), because the enemy really is that evil.
Firefly. Joss Whedon's charming western-in-space, most famous for it's incredible dialogue and sympathetic bad guys. This is roughly the feel I want off-mission, the "us against them even if we're not necessarily friends". Minus space-hooker (Inara) and the GM's girl friend's crazy Sue (River), who both make bunny cry.
Inglorious Basterds. Quentin Tarantino's tribute to classic WW2 movies. These are our tactics: we're completely willing to be brutal and underhanded to accomplish our goals. It's also the level of realism I feel is appropriate in WoW - fantasy themed warsploitation.
Useful/interesting? I dunno. I just felt like sharing.
